BEERS.--Nathan N. Beers, an honored member of Genesee Conference, died at his home in Naples, New York, March 7, 1896, at the age of eighty years. Born in Mendon, New York, converted at the age of twelve, and early called to preach the Gospel, his ministerial career began as a Local Preacher at Allentown, Conn., in 1835. Joining Genesee Conference in 1844, with the exception of one year he was in the effective ranks until 1886, when he took a superannuated relation and settled in Naples. Brother Beers lacked the opportunity of gaining a liberal training in the schools, and bravely undertook the task of self-education. His especial delight was the study of languages. Hebrew and Greek being his favorites, he knew something of Syriac, Arabic, and several modern European tongues. As long as strength lasted he was a student, loving knowledge for its own sake. His was a strong character. While a Local Preacher he ministered for a while to the slaves in the vicinity of Savannah, Georgia, when such action risked his life.In the temperance reform he was uncompromising and struck telling blows aginst the liquor traffic. As a preacher, endowed with a fine presence and a magnificent voice, he was always intellectual, and everywhere drew many cultured people to his ministry. Two strong churches--Monroe Avenue, Rochester, New York, and Troy, Pennsylvania--are partial results of the work of his early ministry. For more than a year Brother Beers had been unable to attend church on account of ill health. For months he had been hovering on the border land. Though suffering much at the last, he did not complain, but would say, "It is all right. God reigns, and His will be done." Rev. Ward Delos Platt and Rev. De Witt Clinton Nye of Genesee Conference; Rev. Joseph Lincoln Gillard, of Central New York Conference; Rev. B. F. Millard, of the Presbyterian church, and Rev. Eugene Anthony, of the Baptist church, Naples, assisted the pastor in the funeral services.
