Olympic Games Gold Medalist Athlete. She was the first American Alpine skier to win two gold medals in a single Winter Olympics. At the 1952 Winter Olympics in Oslo, Norway, she was captain of the women's team and won gold medals in the slalom and giant slalom. She also won U.S. championship titles in the downhill, slalom and Alpine combined in 1950, 1952, 1953 and 1955. In 1958, she was inducted into the National Ski Hall of Fame and into the International Women's Sports Hall of Fame in 1983. Cause of death: cancer.
