Lionel is the son of Irish immigrant Sarah J. and Pennsylvanian Charles S. Pennington, and the grandson of Civil War veteran William F. Pennington of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the first regiment in the United States to enlist men of color during that war. After Lionel's mother passed away, he, his sister Sarah, and his father went to live with his grandfather at the family farm in East Fallowfield.
