William Bishop SMITH was born in the state of Ohio, May 7, 1837; died at New Lancaster, Kansas, Jan. 24, 1916, aged 78 years, 8 months and 17 days.

When but a small boy he moved with his parents to Illinois. He was united in marriage with Angelline HOWATER, Dec. 10, 1857, and a year later they removed to Iowa. There they lived five years, coming to Kansas in 1864. To this union was born fifteen children, nine of whom are still living: Joseph and Clyde in Canada; Henry and James in Oregon; Rachel in Osawatomie; May in Chanute; Irma in Oklahoma; John and Jacob reside in Miami county.

Mr. Smith also leaves a wife, 38 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and a host of friends to mourn his departure.

He was converted thirty years ago in New Lancaster and united with the Brethren church, and has been a very active and devoted Christian ever since, having served as class leader, S.S. superintendent, steward and teacher, and was loved by all who knew him.

His funeral was conducted by his pastor J.N. Edwards and his former pastor Rev. A.J. Shaw, now of Fort Scott, Kansas, after which he was laid to rest in New Lancaster cemetery.
