On Friday morning at his home on upper 6th Street, Mr. Peter Daleiden died from a lingering illness of kidney disease. The deceased was one of the well-known and respected citizens of Kiel.

He was age 57 years, 9 months and 27 days old. He was born in 1857 in Town Mequon in Ozaukee County, Wisconsin and came to Kiel with his parents in 1875 where they settled on the old Klauck farm east of the village border. In the year 1876 he married Katie Menne, and the couple settled in Kiel where Mr. Daleiden started a butcher shop business. Later a furniture business and also a hotel.

About 13 years ago he sold the hotel business and since then has been a factory worker until his illness prevented him from retaining his position. Mr. Daleiden served as village-trustee for many years, and several years as Marshall and Deputy Sheriff.

His wife and three children; Mrs. Mary (Chas.) Grassold, Peter in Stevens Point and Dr. Arthur in Manitowoc, and two grandchildren survive him. Eight siblings, namely Mrs. John Hearle, Miss Katie, Mrs. Lizzie Eastmann, Jacob, Mrs. Lena Huesslein, Mrs. Mary Saichek and Henry, all of which are in Milwaukee, and Joseph whose location is not known also survive him.

The burial took place on Monday Catholic Cemetery, following the funeral service at the St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church with Father Rumpel officiating. The Kiel Furniture Factory, where he was employed, honored him by allowing his fellow workers to escort him to his final rest.

Peter Daleiden, who has held the office of city marshal of Kiel for the past eight years, was born at Mequon, Wisconsin, on the 8th of December, 1859, and is a son of John and Margaret (Bott) Daleiden. The father was a native of Germany and there he was likewise reared and educated. Soon after the death of his first wife, he emigrated to the United States with his two children. Upon his arrival in this country he located in Milwaukee, and there for many years he followed the wagon maker's trade. He next went to Mequon, this state, and engaged in agricultural pursuits until 1874. In the latter year he disposed of his farm and came to Kiel, where he established a saloon and a meat market, both of which he conducted until his death on the 22d of February, 1881, at the age of fifty-four years. The mother was forty-four when she died on the 22d of April, 1880. There were ten children born to Mr. Daleiden and his second wife, of whom our subject was the eldest. The others in order of birth were as follows: Elizabeth, the widow of H. Eastman of Milwaukee; Jacob, who also lives in Milwaukee; John, who is deceased; Helena, the wife of H. Hustlein; Frank, a resident of Milwaukee; Joseph who lives in northern Wisconsin; Margaret, of Chicago; Mary, who married Charles Saicheck, also of Milwaukee: and Henry, who is a resident of Kiel.

After leaving school, Peter Daleiden assisted with the operation of the home farm until it was sold, after which he came to Kiel and engaged in business with his father until the latter's death. He subsequently became sole owner of the meat market, continuing to operate it until 1904, when he retired from active business.

Mr. Daleiden was married in 1881 to Miss Katherine Menne who was born in Rhine, Sheboygan county, on April 26, 1860 and is a daughter of Peter Menne. Three children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Daleiden, as follows: Mamie, the wife of C. Grassolt, of Kiel, by whom she has had one child, Cora, who is nine years of age; Peter, a druggist at Chilton, who married Verona Peters; and Arthur, who is attending the dental college at Milwaukee. Both Mr. and Mrs. Daleiden are communicants of the Roman Catholic church, and he votes the democratic ticket. He has always taken an active interest in political affairs and was one of the first trustees of Kiel. Later he held the office of deputy sheriff for a year, and in 1904 he was elected city marshal, and has ever since been the incumbent of this office. He has proven a very competent officer and has discharged his duties in a manner entirely satisfactory to the community at large as is manifested by the length of his term.
