MICHAEL CHRISTEL

A 23-year old Kiel man, Michael Christel, 1141 Sixth Street, Kiel, was killed while operating his snowmobile on the Sheboygan River Sunday evening. The accident occurred at the First Street bridge in the city about 7:05 p.m.
Christel and two companion, Michael Walsdorf and Gary Wilkens, both of Kiel, were coming back from an outing at Cedar lake when the accident happened. Wilkens was leading the group and followed a snowmobile path while going under the bridge. Walsdorf followed Wilkens and also made it through under the bridge. Wilkens kept on going up the river but Walsdorf's machine clunked out about 100 feet west of the bridge. As he was checking it for fuel, Christel's machine came by without a rider.
Evidently Christel veered off the track and hit a snow drift which was about two feet high, just east of the bridge. After hitting the drift his machine hit the bottom of the cement bridge, ripping off the windshield. Christel's head evidently hit the bridge as his helmet was shattered.
Walsdorf immediately ran to a nearby filling station to call for help. A doctor and ambulance arrived on the scene shortly but Christel was pronounced dead upon their arrival.
Dr. R. C. Strong, deputy coroner, investigated the accident and said Christel died of a skull fracture and broken neck.
Kiel Police Chief Emery Farrand, stated that the clearance from the ice to the bottom of the bridge was about five feet, but that the snow drift which is at the east end, brings the snowmobile much closer to the bottom of the bridge.
Funeral services were held Wednesday morning at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church with Rev. George Kiefer officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.
Christel was born December 7, 1945, the son of Eugene G. and Ruth Kazmeier Christel. He attended Ss. Peter and Paul Parochial School and was graduated from Kiel High School in 1964. He entered the US Army in November 1965, served 18 months in Germany with the Second Armored Cavalry, and was discharged in November, 1967. He was employed by the Walsdorf Roofing Company, Kiel.
Survivors include the parents; five brothers, Dennis, of Kiel, and Steven, Thomas, Daniel and Mark at home; four sisters, Judith, a student at Marian College, Fond du Lac, Jennifer, Susan and Christine, at home; maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Kazmeier and the paternal grandfather, I. H. Christel of Kiel.
