English Victoria Cross holder, born at Brighton, England. William Hewett won his VC at Sebastopol during the Crimean War. Commanding HMS Beagle, and in charge of the right battery, he was ordered to spike his gun and retreat. He is reported to have replied to the order - "Retire? retire and be damned! - fire!" His bravery was also noted at the later Battle of Inkerman. He was presented with his VC by Queen Victoria, at Hyde Park, London, on the 26 June 1857. He retired in 1888 with the rank of Vice Admiral, and was Knighted Sir William Hewett.Vice Admiral Sir William Nathan Wrighte Hewett VC, KCV, KCSI was a Royal Navy officer and a recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. The Hewett Treaty is named after him
