GEORGE MCDONALD MILLER FAMILY

GEORGE BLISS born in Eckartsweier Germany in 1811 and migrated to Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania where he married Elisabetha Zimmermann. The family of 12 children. finally settled in Pine Creek Township, Jefferson County.
The second son, my great great grandfather, Johan Jacob Bliss was born 1841 and settled in Washington Township and later moved to Oregon County, Missouri. Mr. Bliss died 1941 just two months before what would have been his 100th birthday.
The first son of his six children was Andrew Jackson Bliss who was born in 1865. Andy Jackson was a farmer and woodsman, owned the old Brockway Farm on the Game School Road. He married Marilla Prindle and they had 8 children, one of whom was grandmother Eva, who was born Qctober 1886 in a log cabin located to the right as you enter Game School entrance road. Eva Bliss went to summer school to become a teacher and graduated in 1905. Eva Bliss married George Miller and they had 5 children: Neta, Archie, Clarence, Blake and Rebecca. She made enough quilts for seven beds (four to a bed).
There were occasions when my grandfather, George Miller, a woodsman, would float on a log raft to Pittsburgh and then walk back to Brockway. I guess he aquired this hardness from his mother, Rebecca Susan Miller (Hane), (Solomon Hane her father was a civil war veteran). She was the cook in a shanty on a Jog raft trip to Louisville, Kentucky. She boarded a train on return trip to Brockway and 3 days later my grandfather George Blake Miller was born. Grandpap George lost all his fingers in a railroad accident but he still could wrap his thumb around an ax, shovel or any hand tool and work as good as any man.
Archie, the oldest son, was my father and was born in Brockway in 1909. Dad married my mother, Pansy Wood, from Washington County, Pennsylvania. They had two children, Eva Pauline and George (myself). Dad retired after 45 years with the Bell Telephone Company. Up to the present time they have 13 grand and 14 great-grandchildren.
At the age of 14, I remember taking a week off from school and boarded a train for Brockway. On board I carried my suitcase and uncased 30-30 Rifle. I was going bear hunting and had the pleasure of staying at aunt Neta Himes house and eating her homemade bread and butter.
After graduating from Penn State, at this writing I have taught 28 years as vocational agriculture teacher and F.F.A. Advisor at the Brockway High School. I became interested in conservation work and served as county chairman and state president of Conservation District of Pennsylvania. In my spare time I enjoy the grandchildren, hunting, fishing, landscaping, kayaking and soaring.
My wife the former Lois Wise and I have seven children, Bruce, Gary, Susan, Sandy, Rebecca, David and Lisa. After raising a large family she has now accepted the responsibility as director of the Brockway Public Library. As we move toward retirement we plan on traveling and to spend more time with our grandchildren. By: George Miller
