Ensign C. E. Bauch, USNRF, was designated Naval Aviator #2688 (lighter-than-air; LTA) in 1919. LTJG Bauch, a crewmember of the dirigible USS SHENADOAH (ZR-1) in 1925, escaped from that disaster. In 1927 LT Bauch was again designated as a LTA Naval Aviator (#3377).

The AP headline, dateline Akron, March 31, 1931 states: "Shenandoah Survivor is Killed When Auto Hits bridge at Akron".
