Joseph Earhart was born in Ohio, on March 31, 1819, the son of John Earhart & Sarah Wood. On May 27, 1841, he was married to Nancy Rutledge in Jefferson County, Indiana, by Jacob Cox. They had at least three children, all born in Indiana. Nancy died between the 1850 census and 1853, the year Joseph married a woman named Martha Ann Lemming. Joseph and Martha are buried in the First Marion Baptist Church Cemetery in Jennings County, Indiana.
