Born in Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Delbert and Hettie Green Byrd. She graduated as valedictorian of Claremont High School. She was a homemaker and was a member of Patterson Springs Baptist Church. She was very active in her church and worked with the GAs and other youth.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Floyd Hopson; six brothers, Clarence Byrd, Ernest Byrd, Roy Byrd, Emmett Byrd, Wayne Byrd and Charles Byrd; three sisters, Pauline Byrd, Fanney Young and Rubye Elliott.
She is survived by two sons, John Dempsey Hopson of Fairfax, Va. and Joseph Lawrence Hopson and wife, Patricia, of Grover; five grandchildren, Kenneth Hopson of Richmond Va., Clifford Hopson of Fairbanks, Alaska, Russell Hopson and wife, Kate, of Providence, R.I., Roger Hopson and wife, Paula, of Kings Mountain, and Crystal Humphries and husband, David, of Grover; six great-grandchildren, Haley Hopson and Justin Hopson, both of Kings Mountain, Isaak Hopson of Richmond, Caleb Humphries and Mikayla Humphries, both of Grover and Lydia Hopson of Providence.
The funeral will be at Patterson Springs Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
