Sarah Sutherland
CLINTWOOD, Va. – Sarah Cothron Sutherland, age 90, passed away Monday, May 19, 2008, at Dickenson Community Hospital.
She was born in Beech Grove, Tenn., the daughter of the late Clovis and Laura Cothron, and had resided in Clintwood since 1949. She was a member of the Clintwood United Methodist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher for many years and a member of the Clintwood United Methodist Church Women's Group. In years past, she was active in Cub Scouting and Girl Scouting. She was a retired teachers aide at Clintwood Elementary School and loved working with children.
Mrs. Sutherland was preceded in death by brothers, Harry Cothron and Billy Cothron, and sister, Dee Frances Kirkpatrick.
Mrs. Sutherland is survived by her husband of 64 years, Benjamin F. Sutherland, a Clintwood attorney. She is also survived by a daughter, Sarah S. Foulkrod and husband Bruce Foulkrod of Jamison, Pa.; a son, Douglas F. Sutherland and wife Sally of Charlotte, N.C.; and daughter, Carolyn S. Winters and husband Col. Steve Winters of Colorado Springs, Colo. Surviving grandchildren are Matthew Foulkrod and wife Betty of Denver, Pa., Steve Sutherland, a student of Furman University, Ben Sutherland of Charlotte, Greg Winters of White House, Tenn., and Leslie Winters and Jared Winters of Chandler, Ariz. Surviving great-grandchildren are Nicholas Foulkrod and Calleigh Foulkrod of Denver, Pa. She is also survived by three sisters, Marie LeCornu of Lebanon, Tenn., Alice White of Hartsville, Tenn., and Mary Holder and husband Bill of Hartsville. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nephews and great-great-nieces; and a special friend to the family, John Dotson.
Mrs. Sutherland was devoted to her family and was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a very creative talent who enjoyed sewing, crafts and painting, was an avid quilter and gardener and loved wild flowers and all of nature's beauty.
Funeral services for Sarah Sutherland will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 22, 2008, at the Clintwood United Methodist Church, with Pastor John K. Price II officiating. Burial will follow at the Temple Hill Memorial Park, Castlewood, Va. Pallbearers will be family and friends. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Clintwood Funeral Home Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations to be made to the Clintwood United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 237, Clintwood, VA 24228.
