Evan Williams was born June 15, 1807 in South Wales, the son of William and Mary Thomas Williams. In an old record of the Parish of Llanegwad, Hamlet of Ystrad, for the year 1854, Evan Williams' name is recorded as renting 89 acres of farm land for 28 pounds, 7 shillings a year. In today's values this would be about $78.00 a year. Records also show that in 1854 he was appointed "overseer of the poor." In 1844 Evan married Sarah Jeremy who was born in Llanegwad Parish, South Wales on Aug. 11, 1819. Seven children were born to them in Wales and one child was born and died at Florence, Nebraska en route to Utah. Their children were: Thomas Jeremy, Mary Emma, William Nugent, Sarah Jeremy, David John, Esther Catherine, Ann, and John.
Evan's wife Sarah, beautiful and well educated, and her two brothers Thomas E. and David Jeremy were among the first in Wales to join the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was baptized July 2, 1848. Evan was not interested in becoming a member of the Church, nor in having his children baptized, but he did not object to his wife's participation. He was willing to leave his native country because he would not be separated from his family. They sold most of their valuable belongings, but retained lovely objects of glazed china, brass candlesticks, silver and pewter.
Bidding farewell to their relatives, friends and beloved Wales the family arrived in Liverpool April 9, 1861 with their seven children and an eighth one on the way. They were joined by hundreds of Saints waiting for space on the ships sailing for America. After a voyage embodying the usual hardships they arrived in New York, thence on to Florence, Nebraska arriving there early in June. Sarah contracted cholera, and became seriously ill. From her miraculous healing Evan received a testimony of the gospel and he and the children were baptized June 10, 1861 at Florence, Nebraska by George Teasdale. A baby boy, John, was born July 1st and died July 10th at Florence. Two year old Ann died here August 31st.
The Williams family joined the Joseph W. Young Company going west, which consisted of 90 wagons. They arrived in Salt Lake City Sept. 23, 1861. With the money they brought from Wales, they bought 1/4 of a 10 acre square in the vicinity of 6th and 7th West between North Temple and 1st North Streets. Here in their new country the family adjusted very well. Evan learned to love his new home where he worked hard on his farm and made an adobe cottage for his family. He was very retiring in his disposition, kind and gentle in his nature and dearly loved by his family and friends.
At the age of 83 Evan passed away as a result of a farm accident Oct. 14, 1890. His wife Sarah continued to live in the family home with their oldest son Thomas and his family until her death Aug. 2, 1897.
