Jonathan Quincy Barton was born on March 20, 1835, in Sidney, Maine, his father, Anson, was 35 and his mother, Rhoda, was 29. He grew up in Sydney and graduated from Waterville (Colby) college in 1857.

At age 27 Jonathan married Lucy Knox Page in Houlton, Maine. Soon after Lucy passed unexpectedly a year later, he signed up for military service to become a "paymaster." He served on several ships with voyages to the Far East and Central America. Having gained rank and qualifications, he served in Japan from 1874 to 1877 organizing the Imperial Navy's Pay Department and instructing personnel on the system. In June 1875 he was presented to the Mikado, Emperor Meiji, during the Emperor’s visit to the Imperial Navy Technical Training Facility (similar to US Naval Academy). Jonathan described the event in a letter to his sister, Caroline, mother to Jessie Robins (wife of Everett S Knight). For his contribution he received a commendatory notice from the Admiral of Japanese Navy forwarded through the US Secretary of State, US Secretary of the Navy & Minister of US to Japan.

LCDR Barton was promoted to "Paymaster" in May 1884 at the age of 47. After serving on several more ships and staffs he retired at 58 in 1893. He served 30 years and eight months in the U.S. Navy.

Following retirement, Mr. Barton resided in New York, Sidney Maine and Washington DC. He died on October 5, 1903, at the age of 68, and was buried in Arlington Cemetery, Section 3, Grave 1399, a short distance from the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
