Mary Ella Carmack was born the daughter of Pellam Poinsett Carmack and Ann R. Fleming Carmack in Gibson County, Tennessee. She moved to El Paso, Arkansas with her family in the spring of 1878. Mary Ella Carmack married John W. Emison, Jr., February 10, 1887 in El Paso, White co., Ar.. Mary Ella birthed six children, only two lived longer than infancy, Zada and Elva.

Mary Ella Carmack's mother's sister, Aunt Mary Ella Fleming was her husbands step-mother, wife of John W. Emison, Sr. They shared the same home, raising his brother, Jessie Emison and Mary Ella's youngest brother, Eben Carmack and Dora Laycook, the daughter of Laura Carmack and John W. Laycook, a second cousin. Dora married Samuel Anderson Carmack, brother of Mary Ella.
