Ella was born to Joseph Henry and Ella Irene Denton Mills. She married Charles William Armstrong. Born to this union: Charles William Jr., Ella Mae, Dorothy Ann, El;sie Jane, George Emmett, and Marian Irene. Ella was a Sunday School teacher during the 1920's and taught for thirty years at St. Mary's Episcopal Church. Ella and Charles daughter Dorothy became the church organist at age ten and continued to play until World War II. Gas rationing and her young children prevented her coming to church during World War II, but she resumed playing after the war, and retired in 1974. The only pay she accepted was for her automobile expenses. When Dorothy could not come in the late 1920s, Charles Armstrong Jr., provided music with his violin. Charles W. Armstrong Sr., served on the vestry frequently; and in the late 1930s, he became senior warden and superintendent of the Sunday School. The book written by William T. Carrington "A History of St. Mary's Episcopal Church Dover Parish Goochland County, 1877-1977" was dedicated to Ella and Charles William Armstrong.
