Frank filed on a homestead 10 October 1885 and received the final certificate on 27 July 1892. The land description is NW4, of Section 27, Township 13N, R17W of Custer County, Nebraska (Elk Creek Township). The family lived in a sod house until they were established and could have a frame home. Pilot was the local post office and many of the children received their education in the Black Hill Creek school.
Mary married Ernest Lindner, Anna married Frank Kreoger, and Tracy (Theresia) married John Kreoger. The Kreoger (Kroger) family were neighbors to the Gottwald family. Many of the members of these families made up the Black Hill Creek band which was later called the Beechville Band.
Many of these old pioneers are buried in the little Black Hill Creek cemetery which is located very close to their homesteads.
