Nancy was the daughter of Zaccheus Roberts and Nancy Brashears Roberts of Roane County, TN. Her father was a Revolutionary War Soldier who fought in the Battles of Fort Moultrie, the Battle of Eutaw Springs and the Battle of Hanging Rock. He enlisted in March, 1776 and served until 1783. Nancy's mother was from an old and respected family of French Hugenots who fled France due to religious persecution.

Nancy married Alexander Nesmith in Roane County, Tennessee November 11, 1823. She was Alexander's second wife. Nancy's sister, Elizabeth, married Alexander's son, Thomas, making Nancy her older sister's step mother-in-law. The Nesmith family came to North Alabama in the late 1820's or early 1830's. Isaac Roberts, the younger brother of Nancy and Elizabeth Roberts, followed in the early 1840's. Isaac married Elizabeth Dunaway. Elizabeth, Nancy and Isaac are the only three siblings of the eleven children of Zaccheus Roberts known to migrate to Alabama.

The death date documented for Nancy Roberts Nesmith in the book "Roberts Families of Roane County Tennessee" by Snyder E. Roberts is approximated at the year 1867. Family history has long accepted that this abandoned cemetery is her resting place. This information has been handed down through several generations of the Roberts family. It is possible that Nancy's husband, Alexander Nesmith, is also buried in this cemetery but his burial here has not been substantiated.
