Emma Luella Bockoven was born in Indiana in Sep 1862 in to Ancho (b Ireland) and Amanda (b Indiana) Sullivan. It appears she was the 2nd oldest of 4 children as of 1870 when the family was living in Watson, Effingham County, Illinois,.

In 1886 she married John F Davidson. By 1888 the couple had their first child, Mabel, and were living in Kansas. Two more children were born in Kansas (thru mid-1892) and in Oct 1895 their next child was born in Oklahoma.

Emma and her husband and children are recorded in the 1900 Census in Round Grove, Woods, OK:

-- John F Davidson: 57, b June 1843, Ohio (Father b PA, Mother b Ohio); Dry Goods & Grocery Merchant
-- Emma L Davidson: 37, b Sep 1862, Indiana (Father b Ireland, Mother b Indiana); Postmistress
-- Mabel M Davidson: 12, b May 1888, Kansas
-- Hazel S Davidson: 9, b Sep 1890, Kansas
-- J William Davidson: 8, b May 1892, Kansas
-- Chester R Davidson: 4, b Oct 1895, Oklahoma
-- Lizzie E Davidson: 2, b Jan 1898, Oklahoma

Emma's husband, John, a Civil War veteran died in Ohio in 1904 (age 61). I found his memorial and linked him to Emma. Emma remarried in late 1907 to George W Bockoven whose wife died in 1905; the couple married in Woods County, OK; Emma was age 45. Marriage date: 1 Dec 1907.

1910 CENSUS: A BLENDED HOUSEHOLD

The 1910 Census thus finds Emma as Emma Bockoven, living in Aline, Alfalfa, OK with George and their blend of 6 Bockoven and 4 Davidson children ranging in age from 23 (Zelma Bockoven) to 7 (Lillian Davidson), a very full houseful. The oldest, Zelma, is the person I have been researching when I found her in this blended household.

-- George W Bockoven: 51, b Ohio, Father b NJ, Mother b Ohio; House Carpenter
-- Emma L Bockoven: 47, b Indiana, Father b Ireland, Mother b Indiana
-- Zelma D Bockoven: 23, Kansas; Telephone Operator
-- Vera G Bockoven: 21, b Kansas; Saleslady, Retail Dry Goods
-- Vina E Bockoven: 20, b Kansas; Hospital Nurse
-- George A Bockoven: 18, b Kansas; Salesman, Lumber Yard
-- Lola B Bockoven: 14, b Oklahoma
-- Willo M Bockoven: 12, b Oklahoma
-- J William Davidson: 17, b Kansas
-- Chester R Davidson: 14, b Oklahoma
-- Lizzie E Davidson: 12, b Oklahoma
-- Lillian M Davidson: 7, b Oklahoma

1920: A MUCH SMALLER HOUSEHOLD

By 1920, still in Aline, OK, all but the youngest child have married and moved out of the Bockoven household.

-- George W Bockoven: 61, Building Contractor
-- Emma L Bockoven: 56
-- Lillian M Davidson: 17

EMMA'S DEATH

Having found Emma's probate file online at Ancestry, I learned the date of her death as there is no Oklahoma Death Index online. The file does not specify where she died, but a reasonable assumption is that she died at home in Aline, OK.

Emma had owned 4 lots in the Aline First Addition and since she left no Will, her son, Chester, petitioned for Letters of Administration in order to acquire title to these lots so Emma's estate could be sold and the proceeds divided among her 6 children. Married names of 2 of her daughters and the cities of residence of all 6 children appear in the Probate file.

EMMA'S CHILDREN

I searched for all of her children in Find A Grave, Ancestry, and Newspapers. I found nothing at all re Mabel even knowing her married name (Davis) and residence in Los Angeles, CA from her mother's 1929 probate file.

I found more about Hazel (married to Thomas B Wilcox, lived in Aline, OK, and had at least 7 children by 1940 (Census), but initially I could not find anything to tell me when she died or where she was buried. I did find that her husband died in Aug 1965 per the Social Security Death Index. Then, just as I "closed off" research on this family, I did a check outside of Ancestry, etc. and found a US GenWeb burial list for Aline-Star Cemetery online. Included in the list were Hazel and her husband, Thomas Wilcox, whose memorials I finally created in early Dec 2021.

The rest of her children had memorials in FAG. J William's was fairly complete. Chester's was being managed by FAG and offered for transfer, so I accepted and wrote some brief notes in the bio section. Lizzie/Elizabeth and Lillian had both married and had memorials in FAG; I sent edits to link them to their parents and add what I found re places of birth and death.

It has been an honor to prepare this brief biography for Emma L Sullivan Bockoven, wife of Civil War Veteran John F Davidson and after his death, George W Bockoven.
