Per his military records at the National Archives, he served during the Civil War in Company "D" of the 103rd Regiment; Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. He inlisted November 13, 1861 in Kittanning, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania and re-enlisted January 1, 1864 at Plymouth, Washington County North Carolina. He was then captured at the Battle of Plymouth at Plymouth, N. C., was a prisoner of war from April 20, 1864, to April 29, 1865; he was discharged June 16, 1865.

The article to the left claims George was captured at Fair Oaks but the Battle of Fair Oaks AKA: Battle of Seven Pines happened in May of 1862. Almost the entire regament was captured at Plymouth, N. C., April 20, 1864.
