Jeannette Stuart Townsend (1920 - 2009)
Our beloved Mom, Wife, Grandmother, Great Grandmother and dear friend, "Net" has gone to be with the Lord on March 15, 2009. Services will be held on Saturday, March 21, 2009, at 10:00 a.m., at Hillcrest Memorial Park Chapel, 9101 Kern Canyon Road, Bakersfield, California. Graveside services will follow. Officiating will be Chaplain Wayne Meade of Hoffmann Hospice and Father Craig Harrison of St. Francis Church. Jeannette was born September 24, 1920 in Bakersfield, California to parents, John Stuart and Clara Wegis. She was raised and attended high school in Monrovia, California before studying fashion design at Woodbury's in Los Angeles. After graduation she worked for Howard Greer, a fashion designer on Rodeo Drive, and made the late Gloria Vanderbilt's first wedding dress. Jeannette married Ernest W. Townsend III in Napa, Idaho on November 6, 1943 before moving to Salisbury, Maryland where the family strawberry nursery business was located. After World War II, the Townsends moved to Bakersfield where they raised their five children: Ernie, Stuart, Barry and twins, Jeff and Jennifer. Jeannette learned to sew at a very early age. For many years she worked tirelessly with her mother Clara in the upholstery and drapery business. Hundreds of spools of thread and yards of fabric evidenced her talents as a seamstress. Jeannette sewed nearly every day of her life creating not only wonderful dresses and outfits for her children and grandchildren, but also unique and colorful projects and interiors for her many and varied clients and friends. Jeannette will be sorely missed by her loving family, and also by those who knew her and were touched by her many kindnesses. She will continue to live in our hearts and memories. Jeannette was preceded in death by her parents, John and Clara Stuart; her husband, Ernest Townsend; and grandson, J.J. Townsend. She is survived by her sister, Irene Davis of Idaho; son, Ernie and wife, Barbara; son, Stuart and wife, Carol; son, Barry and wife, Karen; son, Jeff and wife, Carol; daughter, Jennifer and husband, Keith Gardiner; grandchildren, Chuck Townsend and wife, Stephanie, Chad Townsend and wife, Melanie, Josh Townsend and wife, Lauren, Trevor Townsend and wife, Annalisa, Melanie Frank and husband, Scott, Jimmy Gardiner and wife, Catie, Danielle Townsend, John Gardiner, Alicia Townsend, Lacey Townsend, Joe Gardiner, Katy Townsend and Deanna Townsend; great-grandchildren, Brianna, Ty, Caitlin, Gracie, Alexandra, Addison and Alaura.
