A native of Mitchell County, he was the son of Virgil and Nola Sparks Boone. James attended Bowman High School, class of 1954 to '55, and served in The United Sates Navy aboard a the USS Bennington, stationed in Norfolk, Va., and Pensacola, Fla. For over 30 years, James worked for the Atlantic Steel Company in Atlanta and returned to Spruce Pine when he retired in 1992.
James is survived by his son, J.R. Boone of Spruce Pine; brothers, Virgil Boone Jr. of Atlanta and Ronnie D. Boone of Spruce Pine; special friend, Gail Miller of Marion; sister-in-law, Hazel Boone of Spruce Pine; close first cousin, J.C. Williams of Spruce Pine.
He has a number of nieces and nephews and stepsiblings, Lena B. Banner of Burnsville, Margaret B. Howell of Kingsmen, Ark., Lucille B. Kimbrell of Atlanta, Howard and Donald Boone of Atlanta, Charles Boone of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., and Worley Boone of Newton-Conover.
The services for Mr. Boone will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday from the Grindstaff Memorial Chapel of Webb Funeral Home with the Revs. David Vess and Wallace Wise officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
Internment will be in the Liberty Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.
