MERTIE L. ALLEY- JONESPORT - Mertie L. Alley, 79, wife of the late Howard A. Alley, died Oct. 13, 2008, at a Bangor health care facility. She was born Nov. 27, 1928, in Jonesport, the daughter of Raymond F. and Adra A. (Seavey) Kelley. Mertie was a member of Sawyer Memorial Congregational Church, Women's Fellowship Group, past Pythian Sisters and past Pocahontas. She worked the majority of her life in local clam and sardine factories. She is survived by two daughters, Adra Knowlton of Rockport and Wanda Merchant and her husband, Arthur, of Beals. She was affectionately known as "Old Nanny on the Hill" by her 11 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by one bother, R. Willis Kelley of Brewer; three sisters, Ethelyn Haines of Brewer, Gwendolyn Kelley of Hermon and Patricia Beal of Eliot; several nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was predeceased by two brothers, Royal and Manfred; and one sister, Virginia Worcester; and a son-in-law, Harley Knowlton Jr. A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17, at Sawyer Memorial Congregational Church, Jonesport, with the Rev. George Woodward, officiating. Friends may call noon until the time of service. Interment will be at Greenwood Cemetery, Jonesport. A service of Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Home, Machias.
