His mother was Jane Fivecoat.

In 1860 he lived with his parents and two siblings on a farm in Jackson Township, Muskingum County, OH. His father also worked as a carpenter.

In 1870 he lived with his father, step-mother, four siblings, and ten-year-old Matilda Tungate in Ward 5 in Des Moines, IA. His father worked as a carpenter.

In 1880 he lived with his father, step-mother, and five siblings in a house at 1302 Sycamore Street (now Grand Avenue) in Des Moines, IA. He and his father both worked as carpenters. He married Carrie Wood May 31, 1881 in Des Moines, IA.

In 1900 he and his wife and their four children lived on a farm they owned, with a mortgage, in Orson (Township?), Mesa County, Colorado.

In 1910 he lived with his son Harry and his family--his wife and their two surviving children--in an orange grove that they owned, with a mortgage, in Highland, CA. Harry worked as a photographer, with his own gallery.

In 1920 he and his daughter Agnes lived in a house they owned, mortgage free, on East Main Street in Highland, CA. He worked as a carpenter and she worked as a clerk in a dry goods store.

In 1930 the two of them lived in a house that was indexed as being on Center Street in Highland, but seems likely to have been the same house they lived in in 1920--Center runs for just one block off of Main. Their home was valued at $3500, and they did have a radio. She worked as a packer in a packing house.

In 1940 they lived in a house they owned at 44 East Main Street in Highland. Their home was valued at $2000. She worked as a fruit packer for a citrus company, with an income in 1939 of $240 for 12 weeks of work.
