Florella's mother, Ada, died in 1916 when she was only three years old. Florella or "Flora" was raised by her uncle Lawrence and Pearl Herberg on their farm in Almelund, Chisago County, MN. It is not known what happened to Flora's father, Nels Hoglund.
While growing up, Flora was surrounded with love by her younger cousins, Cheryl, Verdy, Duane, Val and Marcia. She recycled clothes for her younger cousins using dresses sent by Flora's aunts in California. She sewed beautiful quilts and dresses for the girls. Flora married Henry Carlson and had two boys. The Carlsons lived in Minneapolis.
