After the close of the Revolutionary War, in 1783, Martin moved to Middlebury, Addison County, Vermont, with his Father Daniel (1724-1801) and his brothers Philip (1752-1827), Freeman (1759-1842), John (1765-1849) Appleton (1767-1831), and Stillman (d. 1834). His mother Martha (1725-1790) was left behind until the next year. The Town of Middlebury was organized and the 1st meeting held at the residence of his father, March 29, 1786. At the next annual meeting, March 29, 1787, Martin was elected Constable.
Martin married, March 6, 1788 at Middlebury, Hannah Dean (1763-1838) by whom he had at least 5 children (1 son and 4 daughters): Rheuamy (1789-1826), Martin Nichols (b. 1791), Mary (b. 1793), Charlotte Emma (1803-1838) and Altha (1807-1833). A little over a month after his 1st wife died, Martin, at the age of 77, married, March 13, 1838 at Middlebury, Anna Branch (d. 1874).
In the 1790 US Census, taken in Vermont in 1791, Martin was enumerated in Middlebury as the Head of a Family with 1 Free White Male of 16 years and upwards, 1 Free White Male under 16 years, 3 Free White Females, and 1 other free person.
In the 1800 US Census, Martin was enumerated in Middlebury with 1 Free White Male 26 thru 44 years of age, 1 Free White Male under 10 years of age, 1 Free White Female 26 thru 44 years of age, 2 Free White Females 10 thru 15 years of age, 4 Free White Females under 10 years of age, and 1 other Free Person.
