Louise “Louesa” Fredricka (Hornung) Wagaman was the daughter of John Andreas and Mary Ann (Ackerman) Hornung. She was sometimes called “Lou.” Her father was born in Rothenburg, Germany, and her mother was born in Wurtemberg, Germany. The 1860 US census (enumerated 5 years after Louesa was born) shows her birthplace as Ohio, although later records indicate her birthplace as Missouri. By 1860, the family had moved to Sullivan County, Missouri. Louesa's father served in the Civil war from 1862-1865, and in 1866 the family resettled in Carroll County, Missouri.

Louise married Hastings Mark Wagaman on September 28, 1881, in Carrollton, Missouri. To this union were born four boys and three girls:

Harlan David Wagaman 1882 – 1968
Clarence Edgar Wagaman 1884 – 1938
Gertrude Ann (Wagaman) Benson 1886 – 1947
Jennie Estella (Wagaman) O’Neal 1888 – 1947
Willa Maude (Wagaman) Vaughn 1890 – 1942
Earl Hastings Wagaman 1896 – 1984
Jesse Leland Wagaman 1896 – 1972

Family notes say that Hastings Mark and Louise both spoke German. Louise had red hair, as did a lot of the Hornung women.

As for the spelling of her name, the family Bible and her death certificate show “Louise Fredricka” although her gravestone says “Louesa.” (In German, “Louise” would have pronounced “Loo-ee-zeh.”)
