Hastings Marks Wagaman was the son of David and Mary (Dykes) Wagaman. He was born in Kentucky, and the family relocated to Carroll County, Missouri, sometime between 1850 and 1860, when he was a teen or in his early 20s.

He married Louise “Louesa” Fredrika Hornung on September 28, 1881, in Carrollton, Missouri. To this union were born four boys and three girls:

Harlan David Wagaman 1882 – 1968
Clarence Edgar Wagaman 1884 – 1938
Gertrude Ann (Wagaman) Benson 1886 – 1947
Jennie Estella (Wagaman) O’Neal 1888 – 1947
Willa Maude (Wagaman) Vaughn 1890 – 1942
Earl Hastings Wagaman 1896 – 1984
Jesse Leland Wagaman 1896 – 1972

Hastings served on the Union side during the Civil War. He was a Private in Companies B and D of the 65th Regiment Enrolled Missouri Militia.

Family notes say that Hastings Marks and Louise both spoke German. As for his name, his grandson (son of Clarence) confirms that it’s spelled “Hastings Marks.” The family Bible says “Hastings Marks”; his marriage license, Civil War records, and gravestone say “Hastings M.”; US Census records all say “Hastings,” and the 1850 census also includes middle initial "M.”; his death certificate says “Hasting Marks.”
