Alois ''Al'' George Befort Jr., 72, Kansas City, KS, passed away Wednesday, September 15, 1999, at Providence Medical Center.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Monday, September 20, at Christ the King Catholic Church; burial will be 12:30 p.m. Monday in Leavenworth National Cemetery. Friends may call 5-8 p.m. Sunday at Joseph A. Butler & Son Funeral Home, 19th & Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, KS, where the rosary will be said at 5:30 p.m. The family suggests memorials to Christ the King Church, 3024 N. 53rd St., Kansas City, KS 66104.

Al Befort was born in Hays, KS, on August 17, 1927, and moved to Kansas City, KS, in the early 1930s. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during WWII and the Korean War.

Mr. Befort served as precinct committeeman for the Wyandotte County Democratic Central Committee from 1958 until his death. He was active at local, state, and national political levels. Mr. Befort acted as campaign manager for Congressman Dr. Bill Roy in 1970. The result was that Roy carried all 29 precincts in the 2nd district, a first in Kansas political history.

Mr. Befort was Wyandotte County Democratic Chairman of the 2nd district. He was elected to the Electoral College for presidential candidate George McGovern, an honor he shared with his wife, Midge, who was elected to the Electoral College four years later during Jimmy Carter's presidential bid. Al was a delegate to a National Democratic Mini Convention in Kansas City Mo.

He was honored as Citizen of the Week of Seattle, WA, for his brave efforts to save drowning victims when the pier collapsed at Kitsap Island in March 1979. Al was a member of the Knights of Columbus 3rd Degree, Marion Council 3768 and 4th Degree Fitzsimmons General Assembly. He co-founded the Tootsie Roll Campaign that benefits the mentally disabled in Kansas. Al was a member of and held offices in the Quindaro Township Democratic Club Inc., Blessed Sacrament Civic Club, MidCounty Democratic Club, and Christ the King Senior Citizens GoGetters.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Midge Tomecal Befort; six sons and their wives, A. George Befort III and Janet, Kansas City, KS, David A. and Marsha Befort, Lenexa, KS, Bob L. and Jill Befort, Granite Bay, CA, Tom D. and Becky Befort, Visalia, CA, John F. and Julie Befort, Kansas City, KS, and James W. and Patty Befort, Kansas City, KS; daughter, Amelia K. Myers and her husband, Jere, Lenexa, KS; brother and his wife, James and Lenora Befort, Shawnee, KS; sister and her husband, Luella and Pat Doherty, Shawnee, KS; 18 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
