LUCIUS B. DONKLE, JR. MICHIGAN CITY, IN
Lucius B. Donkle, Jr., age 87, passed way on March 12, 2009 after a heroic battle with pancreatic cancer. He is survived by two sons: Lucius (Priscilla) B. Donkle III of Valparaiso, IN and Christian (Cheri) K. Donkle of Ottawa, IL; daughter, Heidi (Douglas) D. Conn of Turner, ME; grandchildren: Wayne and Gretchen Conn; Lucius IV and Alexander Donkle; and Daniel, Victoria and Jillian Donkle.; dearest friend, Marjorie Hammond; sisters- in-law: Helen (Grant) Meyer and Margot (Tom) Eby; as well as many loving nieces, nephews, and grandnieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 19, 2009 at 11:00 A.M. at the Carlisle Funeral Home, 613 Washington St., Michigan City, IN. Visitation will be on Wednesday, March 18, 2009 from 4-7 P.M. at the Carlisle Funeral Home. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery, Oshkosh, WI. Lucius Donkle, Jr. was born March 3, 1922 in Chicago, IL to Dr. Lucius B. and Francis (Peterson) Donkle. In 1952, he married Joellen Murdock Donkle, who preceded him in death on March 6, 2008. Lucius was also preceded in death by his parents; sisters; and brothers-in-law: Lorraine (George) Weatherby and Donna (John) Baker. Lucius served his country in World War II as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Transportation Corps in the South Pacific. He was an engineering graduate of Cornell University, earned an MBA from Harvard in 1952, and was a registered Professional Engineer in Illinois. His engineering prowess resulted in his name being listed on several patents. He worked in the rack manufacturing industry in product development, engineering, and marketing with Interlake, and later Paltier which brought him from Illinois to Michigan City in 1974. Lou was the founder of Save our South Shore (SOSS) whose activities lead to the formation of the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District (NICTD) in 1977 to fund the then ailing South Shore Railroad. He served on the Duneland Beach Board of Directors and was Commander of the Michigan City Power Squadron. Lou was also a member of the Michigan City Yacht Club, the American Legion, and the First Presbyterian Church. Lou loved to sing. While in college, he toured Europe with the Cornell Glee Club. Later in life he was a member of the First Presbyterian Church Choir and participated annually in the Messiah. During winters in the Florida Keys, Lou sang with a barbershop quartet and directed community musicals. During their retirement years, Lou and Joellen traveled extensively around the world, visiting Australia, New Zealand, Tahiti, Fiji, Tonga, Scandinavia, and Europe and also took many cruises. Locally they traveled in their cruising sailboat through the Great Lakes and Eastern waterways ending their sailing adventures in Annapolis, MD. Memorial contributions for Lucius B.
