Peggy was the daughter of Robert and Verna (Young) Goldsmith. She and Lee Hughes were married September 24, 1984 in Clovis, New Mexico. In February of 1987, she and Lee moved back to Olney after living in Andrews, Texas. She owned and operated Kountry Kurls for approximately 10 years. She was a member of the Hamilton Street Church of Christ.

She was preceded in death by a son, Clinton Dean Chase on January 4, 2005, four brothers, Milo, R.V., Fred, and Billy Goldsmith, and five sisters, Wanda Fetty, Juanita Moore, Wilma Pruett, Oleta Fancher, and Beatrice Boyd.

Survivors at time of death included her husband, Lee Hughes of Olney; five daughters, Jacala Tipton and husband Ricky of Odessa, Texas, Beverly Ashley of Odessa, Texas, Lawana Heard and husband Stacey of Olney, Christine Lough and husband Kevin of Olney, and Donna Hargraves and husband Dale of Eldridge, Iowa; and one brother, Bobby Goldsmith and wife Mary Lou of Olney.
