Carthage, May 29— John Johnson, a brakeman, 40 years of age, employed by the Central Railroad Company, was instantly killed Tuesday afternoon about 4 o'clock. Johnson belonged to the shifting crew and at the time of the accident had been opening a "knuckle" of a freight car coupler. Walking backward his foot caught in a switch point and was knocked down by two cars aiid pushed along the track for about-forty feet. Before he could be released one of the cars stopped, his head was severed and his body horribly mangled.
Coroner Ryan of Philadelphia was summoned, but deemed an inquest un-necessary.
Mr. Johnson lived in Parkham street and leaves a wife and nine small children. He is also survived by four brothers, Alexandria of this village, Thomas of Natural Bridge, Robert of Watertown and David of Canada.
