From the diary of Richard H. Townsend, Vol. 1, 1804-1849, Pages 358 and 359, Year 1847. (At the Maryland Historical Society).

Amos James died on the 29th of this month, in the 83rd year of his age, long a resident of this city and at the time of his death, the eldest male member of Lombard Street meeting. He was originally a cooper, but was afterwards in the food business, in Light Street.

He walked through life, quiet and inoffensive; and was gathered to his fathers, in the esteem of all who knew him. William E. Bartlett m. (Mary James), and George Gillingham m. (Miriam James), married two of his daughters.
