Cornelius Dunham was born December 5, 1796 in Tisbury, Massachusetts, the youngest son of nine children of Cornelius & Tabitha Hancock Dunham. He left home at at a young age and traveled through Ohio, Indiana, Wisconsin, Virginia and the Carolinas before coming to Iowa in the 1840's. He married Sophronia Esther Blake on Vovember 26, 1822 in White county Illinois. They had four children who grew to adulthood: John A., Cornelius, Sophronia and Louisa. Sophronia died sometime before 1840 and Cornelius married Margretta Scott, daughter of James Dennison & Elizabeth Price Scott (and widow of George Samuel Miller). Cornelius & Margretta had five children: Margretta (who married Jasper Newton O'Banion), Martha, Samuel, Jasper (died in infancy), Zachary Taylor Dunham (who married Emma Lane).
