VA Contracting Officer
Robert Jeremiah Connor, 94, a retired Veterans Administration contracting officer and Naval Reserve lieutenant commander, died of cancer Nov. 24 at his home in Silver Spring.
He served on active Navy duty in the southwest Pacific during World War II and retired from the reserve in 1963. He worked for the VA from the mid-1940s until retiring in 1972.
Mr. Connor, a Washington native, was a graduate of St. John's College High School. He was an engineering graduate of Catholic University, where he was track team captain. In the 1920s, he won cycling championships. Before World War II, he worked as a carpenter and civil engineer.
He had been a member of St. Camillus Catholic Church in Silver Spring since 1980 and was a past member of Nativity Catholic Church in Washington. He was a lector and Eucharistic minister.
His first wife, Margaret, died in 1975.
Survivors include his wife of 21 years, Eileen, of Silver Spring; four children from his first marriage, Jeremiah Connor of Gaithersburg, Patricia Sheppard of Laurel, Martha Connor-Donnelly of Washington and Roberta Perkel of Cleveland; a sister, Antoinette Mullen of Laguna Hills, Calif.; nine stepchildren; 13 grandchildren; 37 step-grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.
