Longtime Alaskan Josephine Keenan, 83, died Sunday morning at the Anchorage Pioneer Home. A service was held at Holy Family Cathedral. A burial mass was held at Holy Family Cathedral.

Ms. Keenan was born Jan. 6, 1911, in Washington, D.C. She graduated from Holy Names Academy and Columbus School of Law. She married and moved to Boise, Idaho, in 1940, and to Anchorage in 1954. She was first employed by the Alaska Road Commission and then by the Bureau of Land Management. She retired from government service in 1974. Ms. Keenan was active in Holy Family Cathedral. She was a charter member of the local chapter of Catholic Daughters of America, and a member of the Alter Society, Catholic Social Services, Knights and Ladies of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem. She was a former board member of the Bishop's Attic and Permanent Deaconate Board. Her family said: "She enjoyed all card games, especially Bridge, and gardening. . . Her warm and friendly personality made her a friend to many and her deeply religious spirit (was) an inspiration to all."

She is survived by her sons, Frank of Seattle and Michael of Anchorage; her daughter, Marianne Berus of Anchorage; her brothers, Robert of Washington, D.C., and the Rev. John Connor of Bethany Beach, Del.; her sisters, Catherine Scanlon of Washington, D.C., Antoinette Mullen of Laguna Hills, Calif., Anne O'Donnoghue of Glendale, Ariz., and her grandchildren, Joanne Keenan, Chris Padgett, and Daniel, Teresa and Jolene Berus. She was preceded in death by her sisters Marie Connor and Elizabeth Holloran. Internment was at Anchorage Memorial Cemetery. Donations may be sent to Hospice of Anchorage. Arrangements are by Evergreen Memorial Chapel.
