SAMPSON A. BURGESS
Woodruff November 12 Sampson A. Burgess, 72 widely known farmer of Reidville
township at Woodruff route 1, died at 3:30 o'clock this morning at his home
following two years of declining health and a serious illness of one week.
Mr. Burgess was born and reared in Pickens county, and was a son of the late
Joshua and Sarah Turner Burgess. He had been a resident of Reidville township
for 24 years and during that time he was a member of the Abner Creek Baptist
church.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Margaret Roper Burgess; three sons, Elmer Burgess
of Greer route 5, James Burgess of Duncan route 1, Feltz Burgess of Reidville;
six daughters, Mrs. J. T. Hembree of Taylors, Mrs. I.W. Gossett of Gray Court,
Mrs. J. M. Kennedy of Lyman, Mrs. John Gates of Woodruff, Mrs J. T Hollaway of
Charleston and Miss. Mary Alma Burgess of Woodruff route 1; an adopted son,
Harold Grsmon of Greenv ille; three sisters, Mrs. R.W. Phillips of Duncan, Mrs.
J. H. Fortner of Woodruff route 3 and Mrs. D. R. Godfrey of Woodruff; 17
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the Abner
Creek Baptist church, conducted by the Rev. D. R. Hill, assisted by the Rev.
Jennings Johnson, the Rev. W. J. Jordan and the Rev. J. M. Easler, Burial will
be in the church cemetery.
The following nephews will be active Pallbearers: Darity and Landrum Godfrey,
Lawrence and Sampson Burgess, Hampton Phillips and Barney Fortner.
The deacons of the Abner Creek Baptist church are asked to meet at the church at
2:45 o'clock and serve as honorary pallbearers.
The body will be carried to the home at 11 o'clock Saturday morning and further
announcements will be made by the Wood Mortuary.
