Farmer Fatally Hurt On Highway
J.H. Burgess of Cashville Killed Near Greer; Funeral Today
J.H. Burgess, 54 well known farmer of the Cashville community, was fatally injured Saturday night when he was struck by an automobile near the Southern Bleachery on the Spartanburg-Greenville highway.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2'oclock this afternoon at the Selma Baptist Church near Woodruff by the Rev. C.L. Boyter, assisted by the Rev. Edger Johnson. Interment will be in the adjoining church cemetery.
Mr. Burgess gave out of gasoline as he was driving on the Piedmont highway near Greer. As he started to a nearby filling station to purchase a supply of gasoline, he was struck by the automobile, said to have been operated by a resident of the Southern Bleachery community. He was dead before he reached the Chick Springs Hospital nearby where he was rushed following the accident.
He was a member of the Selma Baptist Church and of the Cashville Camp, W.O.W. No. 659.
Surviving are his widow, who before marriage was Miss Mattie Trotter and the following children, R.S. Burgess, J.L. Burgess, T.E. Burgess, H.H. Burgess, F. F. Burgess, Mrs. Edd Johnson, Misses Frances and Sarah Burgess, all of Woodruff route 1; J.C. Burgess and H. M Burgess of Greer; S.T. Burgess of Wichita Falls, Texas, Mrs. J. A. Kemp of Chattanooga Tennessee, one brother S. A. Burgess of Wellford route 3; three sisters, Mrs. R.W. Phillips of Wellford route 3 Mrs. J.H. Fortner of Spartanburg route 4 and Mrs. D.R. Godfrey of Woodruff, also survive.
The body of Mr. Burgess will be at the late home at Chashville until the hour to leave for funeral.
The inquest of Mr. Burgess will be held at Greer by Coroner Joe Wooten of Greenville at a later date.
