Elvin Earl Crume was the son of Uriah Crume and Alice Josephine Daniel. The family moved from Missouri to Curry County, New Mexico, by the 1920 Census where his father was a farmer.

Elvin married Maggie Holcombe around 1913. They welcomed their first child – Mabel Elnora – in 1915, but she died in 1918. Their second child – Charles – arrived in 1916. The couple's next three children would all tragically die in infancy – Elvin Jr, Dorothy Marie, and Elmer Frederick. Their last child – Abram Paul – was born in 1927. Only Charles and Abram lived to adulthood. Elvin and Maggie were divorced by the 1940 Census.

By the 1950 Census, Elvin is married to Nettie I Crume and living in Tolar, New Mexico. In his son's obituary in March 1981, Earl is listed as living in Ft. Sumner, New Mexico. Elvin would die less than two weeks after his son, Charles. Elvin outlived all of his children.
