Charles K Crume was the second child born to Elvin Earl Crume and Maggie Mable Holcombe. His parents had six children, but only Charles and his younger brother Abram lived to adulthood. The Holcombe have deep roots in Texas, but Charles' grandfather moved the family to New Mexico before 1910. The family members moved back and forth between Texas and New Mexico.

Charles used his middle initial "K" as an adult rather than his full middle name. His WWII Registration lists his middle name as "Keylon", but the military BIRLS Death File list his middle name as "Keyton". Other versions of his middle name include "Keaton" or "Kenton". There is no birth or death certificate available to solve the question of his true middle name.

Charles married Beatrice Henrietta Kranz before the 1940 Census. The couple was living in Roswell, New Mexico, at the time of the census. Charles was working as the manager of a roller-skating rink. Charles enlisted in the U. S. Army in July 1945 and served until his discharge in January 1946. By 1950, Charles and Beatrice were still in Roswell where Charles was working at the air base – likely Walker Air Force Base - as a laundry equipment mechanic. Charles and Beatrice welcomed six children into their family – four daughters and two sons.

In 1963, Charles and Beatrice moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico, where Charles would live the rest of his life.
