Born in Ireland, County Cork to James Carroll and Jane Blake Carroll, records differ slightly from gravestone, family Bible and pension applications, the most likely date is August 22, 1756. William was the Carroll ancestor in this lineage who emigrated from Ireland to the United States with two brothers (Daniel b1750 and Charles b1752) in 1775 at the age of 19.

- January 1776 he enlisted in the cause of American independence
- Re-enlisted again on January 21, 1777 in the Fourth of New Jersey Continental Line, Second Establishment.
- Discharged at Philadelphia in 1783.
(He served in nine battles of the war including Long Island, New Rochelle, White Plains, Short Hills, Brandywine, Germantown, Monmouth, Chemung, Newton and probably endured the bitter winter at Valley Forge under General George Washington).
- Following his discharge he settled in Northumberland County Pennsylvania.
- March 3, 1785 - Married Phebe Wortman
- 1805 he settled into a wilderness which later became Allegany County New York
- 1806 he bought a farm in the then town of Angelica which was subdivided into the town of Ossian in 1808 and later in 1826 put into the present town of Burns. He lived there with his wife Phebe until their deaths within two months of each other.
- June 21, 1824 passed away near Almond Hill at the home of his brother-in-law William Hopkins

FAMILY ANCESTRY OF NOTE:
William's Great Great Grandfather Anthony (O'Carroll) was a brother to Charles Carroll in Ireland who was was the first from that line to come to America. He was known as 'Charles the Settler' or 'Charles the Immigrant'. His son was Charles of Annapolis and, in turn, Charles of Annapolis was the father of Charles Carroll of Carrollton who signed the Declaration of Independence.

His Great Great Grandfather was also brother to Keane Carroll whose son Daniel (1696 - 1751) had a son Daniel (II) (1730 - 1796) who was helped plan the US Capital and was a signer of the United States Constitution from the State of Maryland.
