There were known family relatives in Chicago in 1909, and it is believed that the South family was visiting these relatives in Chicago for the Christmas holidays when Margaret fell ill with pneumonia. She died 3 days later and her remains were returned to Baltimore for burial on Christmas day.
Her recently obtained death certificate from Cook County, IL (see photos)states her age as 4 years, she was in fact age 3 years and 10 mos.
Sad to think that in less than 30 years after her death, antibiotics would come into common use which would have saved her life had they been available at the time.
At the time of her death, Margaret was the only child of Martha and Howard South. Two years after Margaret's death, the couple had their 2nd child, Alice South, who would live to adulthood. A 3rd child, Howard E South, died from a drowning accident in 1932 at age 17.
