Man Killed In Crash IN Elwood

A former Crawfordsville resident was one of three men killed and his wife was gravely injuried early Saturday afternoon in a three-car crash near Elwood. Jonathan Edward Everett, 43, 3429 Hillside Ave., Indianapolis was motoring with his wife, Elizabeth, on a trip to Michigan to visit a neice. The accident occured on Ind. 37 a mile north of Ind. 28 at 1:20 P.M. State trooper William Howard met a car being driven at high speed south on 37 by Troy Alexander, 27, Tuckerman, Ark., and turned around to pursue the car. Alexander's car was around a curve and out of the trooper's sight when the crash took place, but Howard said the Arkansas man must have lost control of it- his car sidewiped one being driven by Charles Edward Hallam of Kokomo, then skidded broadside down the road into the northbound Everett auto, driven by Mrs. Everett. Hallam escaped injury, but both Alexander and a companion, J. W. Heath 28, Newport, Ark. were killed. Mrs. Everett continued in critical condition Monday in Mercy Hospital at Elwood suffering from fractures of both legs and one arm, a concussion and internal injuries in addition to multiple cuts and bruises. Her husband's body was brought to the Bright Funeral Home here. He was born in Crawfordsville, IN. Feb 9, 1914, a son of the late Augustus Belmont and Laverna Grimes Everett. He was married to Jane Fry. They lived for a time at Kokomo before moving to Indianapolis, where he formly was employed with Economy Electric Company and at the time of his death was with Moran Electric Service. Mr. Everett was a WWII veteran, serving in the European Theater as a postal clerk. He was inducted in Oct. 1941 and discharged February 1946. Surviving besides the widow are four sisters, Mrs. Leonard Sutter of Lafayette, Mrs. William A. Moore of Kingman, Arizonia, and Mrs. Charles Fry and Mrs. Albert Parker of Crawfordsville, one brother, William Everett Culp of Mishawaka, an uncle, Harry Everett of Crawfordsville, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceeded in death by one brother, Herman. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, at the Bright Funeral Home, with burial at Oak Hill Cemetery. Rev. Samuel Lovelace, pastor of the Indianapolis Church Of God, will be the officiating minister. Friends may call at the funeral home, beginning at noon Tuesday.
