GERE: John A. Gere was the appointed preacher for Liberty (1841-43). Born Apr. 8, 1799, in Chester, Mass., he was the father-in-law of ordained Elder James Lester Shipley (1838-1937) and grandfather of ordained Elder John A. Gere Shipley (1870-1946). J. A. Gere was admitted to Baltimore MEC on trial in 1823, ordained a Deacon in full connection in 1825, and ordained an Elder in 1827. He preached under MEC appointment 48 ¼ years (1823-58, 1859-74) and died June 3, 1874, in Shickshinny, Pa. (age 75). His other appointments were Pendleton, Auckwick, Bedford, Botetourt, Christiansburg, Baltimore City Station, Frederick, York, Annapolis, Baltimore Circuit, West River, Severn, North Baltimore Station, Jefferson, Carlisle Station, Huntingdon, PE of Northumberland Dist, Fayette St (Baltimore), Sunday School Agent, and Agent of Tract and Sabbath School Interests in Baltimore MEC (1823-58); East Baltimore MEC (1859-69); and Central Pa MEC (1869-74). He is buried at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Baltimore.
