J. Russell Bobbitt Sr., senior partner of Bobbitt Memorial Chapel, has been appointed by Gov. Ronald Reagan to the state Board of Funeral Directors and Embalmers.
A funeral director for 40 years, Bobbitt is the first man to be appointed to this commission from the San Bernardino area. His appointment term is for four years.
A graduate of San Bernardino High School, Bobbitt attended Oregon State College and graduated from the California College of Mortuary Science.
He was the first president of San Bernardino Valley Junior College, is a past president of the 20-30 Club, past president Host Lions Club, and past president of the San Bernardino Chamber of Commerce. He was chairman of the San Bernardino Fire Commission for eight years and served on the board of the San Bernardino Community Hospital for several years.
His sons, J. Russell Jr. and Gary Bobbitt, share the partnership of Bobbitt Memorial Chapel.

He was born April 12, 1907, in Lynchburg, Ohio.
He was funeral director and former partner of Bobbitt Memorial Chapel until his retirement in 1966. He then moved to Oceanside.
He was past president of San Bernardino Host Lion's Club, 1955-1956; the San Bernardino Chamber of Commerce, 1957; and the California State Board of Funeral Directors and Embalmers, 1974.
He was former chairman of the San Bernardino City Fire Commission; United Commercial Travelers; a 50-year member of the San Bernardino Masonic Lodge No. 348 F & AM; charter member of San Bernardino Scottish Rite; York Rite Bodies of San Bernardino; Al Malaikah Shrine of Los Angeles; and the San Bernardino Shrine Club.
Survivors include two sons, J. Russell Bobbitt Jr. of San Bernardino, Gary Bobbitt and his wife, Patricia, of San Bernardino; daughter, Kristine Bobbitt of Oceanside;
five grandchildren, Kenneth Bobbitt, David Bobbitt, Karen Holben, Lisa Bobbitt, and John Bobbitt;
three great-grandchildren, Kerry Bobbitt, Andy Bobbitt and Evan Holben.
Friends may call 4 to 7 p.m. today at Bobbitt Memorial Chapel. Service is 11 a.m. Wednesday at Bobbitt Memorial Chapel.
Interment will be in Mountain View Cemetery.
