M. FICKEL DEAD (article from family files)

Marcellus Fickel died at his home in Somerset, Tuesday, April 23rd, 1913, 6:30 o'clock in the morning. He has been in failing health since February from heart trouble. His death adds another honored name to our already long list of pioneer dead and to the over lengthening roll of patriots who have responded to the final summons.
Marcellus Fickel was born in Perry co., Ohio, August 3, 1846. At the age of ten years he went with his parents to Franklin co., Ohio, coming to Johnson co., Kansas in 1869. December 15, 1870, he was married to Nancy Jane Reece at Santa Fe, Mo. They resided on a farm in Johnson co. six years, when they came to this county and two years farmed the Cox farm in Paola twp. and moved to a farm known as the Harrelson farm, northwest of Somerset, where he continuously farmed for 36 years. They raised their family there and he with his aged companion moved to Somerset several years ago. Mr. Fickel, from his long residence here, had a general acquaintance and was greatly respected. Until recent years, when his health failed, he was a hard working man and a successful farmer. He was honorable, honest, truthful and reliable and everybody had a good word for him. He was a veteran of the civil war, enlisting in Co. A. Ohio infantry, February 9, 1864, for three years or during the war. From there he was sent to Alexandria, Virginia, and served in the 9th corps, and was with Grant in his campaign, being in the battles of the Wilderness, Spottsylvania and a number of decisive battles of the war. After the surrender of Lee he with his company were sent to Washington, D.C., and did guard duty until discharged in August, 1865. Mr. Fickel was a religious man, some years ago uniting with the Methodist church at Somerset. He was a member of McCaslin Post G.A.R of Paola since the organization. He was the father of thirteen children, eight girls and five boys, eight of whom with his aged companion, survive him. All their children but two are living on farms in this county. Harry W., James and Walter Fickel, Etta, wife of Charles Madison, Amy, wife of Frank Rhoades, Emma, wife of Harry Sims. In this county, Eva, wife of Arthur Pugh, in Greenwood co., Kas., and Mable, wife of Edgar Phillips, at Lind, Washington.
The funeral services were held from the Methodist church at Somerset, Wednesday. The remains were buried in the Somerset cemetery. The sympathy of many friends goes out to Mrs. Fickel and the family.

Note: Father is James Fickel (1818-1886)
