The funeral on Tuesday, June 4, was held at 2 p.m. in the Methodist church at Somerset, conducted by Rev. A.C. Asling of Prescott, Kansas, assisted by Rev. E.M. McDaniels, Paola. The pallbearers were these grandsons, Caleb Madison, Fred, Harry, William and Robert Fickel and Harold Rhodes, and the flower girls were Nettie Fickel, Nettie Madison, Frances Fickel, Violet Williams, Hazel Sims and Mildred Fickel.
Mrs. Fickel's maiden name was Nancy Jane Reece, daughter of James Edward and Louisa Reece. She was born on December 14, 1853, and on December 15, 1870, was married to Mr. Fickel in the village of Santa Fe, near Kansas City, Missouri. Over 56 years ago the couple moved to the Somerset community, and there spent their active lives.
Mother Fickel was beloved for her true Christian character and her kindness to old and young. She today rests besides the lover of her girlhood, on the slope above the tree-fringed stream of Wea creek, on the banks of which she spent many days fishing and communing with nature. The tomb will forever be a shrine for devotion and worship by the generations that follow her. She belonged to God's nobility of the lowly, whose mission in life was work and service.
