Obituary for Roy Daniel Stainbrook, Osawatomie Graphic, Pg 8-A, 28 Jul 1999

LA CYGNE - Roy Daniel Stainbrook, La Cygne, died Sunday, July 25, 1999 in his home. The La Cygne native and longtime businessman was 85. The son of Daniel Stainbrook and Emma (Trinkle) Stainbrook, he was born July 19, 1914 in La Cygne. He was one of eight children. Mr. Stainbrook was a 1932 graduate of La Cygne High School. On Dec. 24, 1938 he and Wanda Diediker were married in Olathe.

In the late 1930s, Mr. Stainbrook opened Stainbrook's Auto Supply in Osawatomie. He sold the business in August 1942 to join the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Panama Division, and served as a foreman of parts in the Corozal Canal Zone. He handled spare parts and mechanical repairs for the Panama Engineer Division until his release in 1944.
In 1945 he re-opened Stainbrook's Auto Supply in La Cygne which is owned and operated by the Stainbrook family.

In his more than 50 years of operating Stainbrook's in La Cygne, he not only touched the lives of every person in the community with his wit and interest in others, but had friends and acquaintances throughout the United States due to his uncanny marketing skills, incredulous knowledge of parts and unique method of keeping vast amounts of information in his head and his "bitty black book".

Mr. Stainbrook was active in his community, including serving on the La Cygne City Council and as a board member for the La Cygne Medical Facility. He was a member of the International Order of Odd Fellows and of the United Methodist Church of La Cygne.

Survivors include his wife, Wanda, of the home; a son, Terry Stainbrook, La Cygne; and two grandchildren. Services were held Wednesday in the United Methodist Church, followed by burial in Oak Lawn Cemetery.
