Born May 4, 1919 in Canajoharie, he was the son of John E. and Magdalene Moore Barney. He was educated in the St. Johnsville schools and was a lifelong area resident.
Mr. Barney was employed at the Palatine Dye Co. for 28 years until the company closed and then worked at Princeton Industry in St. Johnsville for many years before retiring in 1981.
He was a member of St. Patrick's Church in St. Johnsville.
Mr. Barney married Emma Shulenburg in 1939. She died April 19, 1948. He then married Dorothy Dingman Barney on July 1, 1967.
In addition to his wife, survivors include four sons, John E. Barney Sr., and Barry W. Barney, both of Fort Plain, Alan F. Leon Sr. of St. Johnsville and Larry Barney of Las Vegas; a daughter, Lois J. HIll of Frankfort; two brothers, Harold Barney of West Oneonta and William Barney of Cooperstown; 14 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Gray Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 34 Center St., Fort Plain, with pastor Kenneth Swain officiating. Burial will be in Canajoharie Falls Cemetery.
Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 this evening at the funeral home.
