Winfield Scott Gifford died in his home on South 12th St., St. Joseph, Missouri of atherosclerosis on December 17, 1930 at 4:05 PM. He'd been under the care of a local physician for a week.

I don't know much about him except for the information I've found in his death record and census records, but I'm recording the information here, because I own the house on South 12th St. that he and his family lived in for many years.

I believe that Mr. Gifford's spirit is still here. I've seen him many times. He's a small, frail-looking man who wears a black fedora hat and a western two-tie along with a white shirt, dark jacket and pants. He sometimes looks longingly out the main window in the downstairs hall. He often paces both the upstairs and downstairs hall.

He was married to a Julia A Gifford and preceded her in death. After his death, she moved to 2229 Doniphan Ave. She was visiting the family farm in Oregon, Missouri on February 15, 1957, when she caught her coat on a gate latch and fell in the yard, fracturing her hip. She was admitted to the Hillside Rest Home on North 7th St., St. Joseph, MO, and died there on April 15, 1957.

Winfield had worked as a general merchant and was retired at the time of his death. On the census records, he's listed as a "farmer."

Winfield's father was Carafaur G. Gifford of New York, and his mother was Rahamah H. James also of New York.

I recently learned that before Winfield's marriage to Julia, he was married to Esther Evelyn Cosner Gifford. The two had several children, including: Virginia Burton, Phyllis Reily, Roger Gifford, and Julia May Gifford Caglione. Julia was born on May 8, 1922 and passed away on June 13, 2013 in Hendersonville, North Carolina, from complications of a fall.

After WInfield's death, the family moved to Denver, Colorado.

Winfield was attended by the Heaton Bowman Funeral Home in St. Joseph. He and Julia are buried at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Oregon Missouri.

The informant on the death certificate is Miss Dorothy Gifford, whom I assume is Winfield's daughter from his second marriage. She also resided at the house on South 12th St..

Winfield still has relatives in town. I've heard from one of the descendants who told me that Winfield has a descendent who's over 100-years old. If you know anything about Winfield and Julia, I'd love to know more.
